Happy New Year!

I am so ready to get this year started off right! Living in the Midwest and dealing with the changes in temperature, most recently the sub zero temps with the wind chill, my skin can take a beating. Add to that the change in my daily habits, most notably a lack of structure with my diet and drinking enough water, boom, instant skin problems. No one wants to go into the new year with skin problems, right? So, today we’re going to be chatting about skincare and your easy 5-step detox to get that healthy glow back with some amazing products that are made safer!

But before we get into products we put ON our skin let’s chat about the number one thing you can do for healthy skin. WATER!

So splashing your face won’t do the trick, you actually need to drink the water and no even though coffee is mostly water, that doesn’t count (if it did I’d be good to go!). Really though you need to be drinking enough water. The average adult human body is 50-65% water, averaging around 57-60%. Without adequate water intake, skin can appear dull, and wrinkles and pores more become more prominent. You should aim for half an ounce to an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day.

Water is a basic necessity but so is a great skincare routine. This is a basic 5-step skincare plan that will be best for skin types that are normal to dry or normal to oily. If you have excessively dry or oily skin you may have to tweak the recommendations just a bit until you find your groove but one thing is for sure, you will not be disappointed with the quality of these products.

First things first, a few facts about skincare:

Did you know about 80% of cosmetics ingredients have never been tested for safety?! By now most of you have probably seen the recent news about the children’s makeup at Claire’s being pulled from shelves after testing positive for asbestos. This is serious business, if “play” cosmetics for kids aren’t being regulated, do you think companies are rigorously testing their products if they aren’t required by law to do so? I’d love for the answer to be yes, that companies honestly care about their customers but most of them are only out to make a buck unfortunately.

The 5 products I’m going to recommend for this detox are all Beautycounter products. Beautycounter believes in full transparency with their products. They are committed to a health and safety standard that goes well beyond what is legally required in the United States. The Never List™ is made up of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals that are never used in their products which is why this is my number one skincare brand and I love to share it!

So let’s get started!

What you will need:

Beautycounter+ No. 3 Balancing Charcoal Mask

Charcoal Cleansing Bar

Nourishing Rosewater Mist

Nourishing Cream Cleanser

Nourishing Day Cream OR Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion

The scoop on each product:

Beautycounter+ No. 3 Balancing Charcoal Mask

A nutrient rick kaolin clay mask used to purify and balance skin by absorbing excess oily and drawing out impurities. The main ingredient in this mask is charcoal which can minimize the appearance of pores while the salicylic acid stimulates exfoliation.

Charcoal Cleansing Bar

This is a best seller and for good reason. It’s a basic cleansing bar made with all of the goodness of detoxifying charcoal, hydrating coconut oil, and antioxidant-rich, organic green tea.

Nourishing Rosewater Mist

Made with organic rose essence, purified water, and moisturizing sodium hyaluronate, rosewater mist is a fantastic multi-tasker. Benefits of rose water include: helping fight acne, helps heal scars, cuts and wounds, and helps maintain skin’s pH balance.

Nourishing Cream Cleanser

The nourishing cream cleanser is a tried and true classic. This ultra-gentle daily cleanser is lightweight yet deeply moisturizing, the creamy formula contains witch hazel to tone skin, and coconut oil and aloe to help hydrate.

Nourishing Day Cream

The Nourishing Day Cream is another classic Beautycounter product. This moisturizer is a lightweight yet hydrating face cream. Easily absorbed and never greasy, the unscented formula contains a mix of organic coconut oil, safflower oil, and aloe to provide nourishing hydration, plus antioxidant-rich acai to protect against dry skin.

Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion

I call this the magic sauce. This is another best seller (it sold out TWICE when it first launched!). This is also a lightweight moisturizer that helps skin adapt to the ever-changing aggressors of modern life by adjusting hydration levels throughout the day for a smooth look and feel, and a radiant glow. Breakthrough Bio-Mimic Technology harnesses the unique life-giving properties of plants to exactly match the structure of skin, giving it precisely what it needs and nothing it doesn’t.

How to detox!

Day 1: My recommendation is to start with one day of charcoal cleansing bar and balancing mask then work your way up to using it more often if your skin allows. Especially with the winter weather, charcoal can be drying for some people. In the non-winter months I can use it daily but I have tweaked my regime for these extra dry months.By all means if you are having success with more than one day of use, go for it!

AM: In the morning start by cleansing your face with the charcoal bar and using a warm washcloth to make sure all of the soap residue is removed, this is a super important step! My skin has benefited so much by using a washcloth and not just splashing water on my face to remove soap. After cleansing, spritz your face with the rosewater mist, I usually do 2-3 sprays. Give your face a few minutes to absorb the rosewater then follow up with your moisturizer of choice the Nourishing Day Cream or the Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion using 1-2 pumps of the moisturizer. Beautycounter also carries an anti-aging moisturizer call the Countertime Rejuvenating Line which is also fine to use but for the purpose of this post we’ll stick with the 2 moisturizers that are geared toward the most skin types.

PM: Set aside about 10 minutes while you’re brushing your teeth or prepping for bed to let your Balancing mask set. Using a brush or your finger tips cover your face with a thin layer of the mask. Give it about 10 minutes to dry. You’ll see the oil being absorbed into the mask as it dries. Once dry, rinse your face and finish the day by cleansing your face again, this time using about a pea sized amount of Nourishing Cream Cleanser. This is a gentle cleanser that is great for everyone and can easily be used daily. Use just a dime size amount, work into the skin in a circular motion and then rinse with a warm washcloth.

Days 2-7: If you are loving the Charcoal detox you can continue the day 1 routine multiple times a week. If your skin could use a little extra hydration, move to the second routine.

AM: Start your day with a pea size amount of the Nourishing Cream Cleanser. Work into the skin in a circular motion and rinse with a warm washcloth. Follow up by spritzing your face 2-3 times with the Rosewater Mist. Once you’ve given your skin a chance to absorb the Rosewater, finish with 1-2 pumps of Nourishing Cream Cleanser or Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion.

PM: Repeat steps 1 and 2 above (see below for add-ons)

If you really want to get the most out of your skincare routine you can work in the No 3 balancing oil after your moisturizer 1-2 times a day, swap out the Rosewater Mist for the No. 3 Balancing Mist and add a night cream to your PM routine.
