Hey all, welcome to week 2 of the whole home detox! Last week we chatted about how you could start the new year with clean gorgeous skin using safer products to detox. This week I’m going to focus on cleaning the kitchen.
If you’re anything like me, the kitchen is my number one place where a multitude of cleaners are used. Just think about all of the things you use in your kitchen. Surface cleaners, dishwasher detergent, dish soap, hand soap, and floor cleaner just to name a few. Perhaps you use even more than that in your kitchen. The rest of my house is typically spot cleaned (and we’ll get to that as well in later weeks!) but the kitchen is a place where cleaners are used frequently, even daily.
Now stop and think a minute about your level of exposure to those cleaners if you are using them every single day, eating off the dishes washed with dish soap or dishwasher detergent, using any counter tops for food prep, it can really add up. I know the biggest argument is that the amount of harmful chemicals we are actually exposed to in these products is minuscule and if they are marketed to the masses they MUST be safe right?
We’re still learning
We’re still learning about the possible effects of ingredients in these products. For example, for years there was a huge push for antibacterial soaps. In September of 2016, the FDA issued a statement about the safety and effectiveness of antibacterial soaps and subsequently banned the use of triclosan, triclocarban, and 17 other chemicals in soaps and body washes. This excludes those used in hospitals and food service settings. There is some evidence that triclosan, triclocarban and the other chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness.
Even though several ingredients have been banned from the use in consumer products, there are still several ingredients of concern in cleaning products. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) investigated more than 2,000 cleaning supplies on the American market and found that many were linked to serious health problems.
They conclude that:
• Fumes from some cleaning products may induce asthma in otherwise healthy individuals. A large and growing body of evidence links frequent use of many ordinary cleaning supplies at home or on the job with development of asthma and other respiratory problems. It is already known that cleaning product fumes may trigger attacks in persons previously diagnosed with asthma.
• Common cleaning ingredients can be laced with the carcinogenic impurity 1,4-dioxane. Independent tests have detected the presence of 1,4-dioxane in numerous name-brand cleaning supplies. Other products contain preservatives that release low levels of cancer-causing formaldehyde.
• Children born to women who held cleaning jobs while pregnant have an elevated risk of birth defects, according to a 2010 study by the New York State Department of Health.
• Some cleaners can cause chemical burns and poisonings as well as less severe irritations and allergies. Severe physical reactions signal that consumers should take care anytime they use these products.
• Despite these health concerns, cleaning product labels often do not give consumers enough information about their ingredients to allow people to make informed decisions on which ones are safer and which ones might harm their health.
What can you do?
So what can you do to protect yourself and your family from potentially harmful products? First, check out my post on apps to you can use to test your products. These are fantastic ways to easily add the app to your phone and scan your products. So, if you’re standing in the cleaning aisle with no idea what to do, pull out your cell phone and simply scan the barcode.

The number one thing we use to clean our kitchen is Thieves cleaner! This is a multi-purpose cleaner so you can use it on countertops, tables, glass, degreaser, and floors. It comes in a concentrated form so one bottle goes a long way! Oh and if you’re skeptical check out these amazing agar plate results!

Additionally, we use the Thieves dish soap for hand washing dishes and the foaming hand soap.
Speaking of essential oils, you can also make your own DIY cleaners with oils like citrus fresh (my favorite), lemon, or orange essential oils, just to name a few. There are so many great DIY recipes on pinterest!

For dishwashing I use Seventh Generation, Free & Clear pods. They work really well to get things clean and they have an A rating on EWG. They’re easy to get at Target or Amazon (affiliate) so they’re convenient!
